Established in January 2010 by three friends: Alecia Marcum, Rachel Hunt, and Sara Larocca-Ramm, SOTBM works with independent designers who often hand make their own designs and create art that feels like it is from another era. Sisters of the Black Moon is a really interesting name. Can you please tell us the origin of it?
The name of the store was inspired by the song “Sisters of the Moon” by Fleetwood Mac. A song that played while we were on a buying trip, a trip where Sisters of the Black Moon was conceived.

How long has Sisters of the Black Moon been around?
We were established in January 2010

How did you three become friends?
We met through mutual friends in the Austin music/social scene.

What made you decide to start Sisters of the Black Moon?
The 3 of us were looking for something that gave us more creative freedom than our current situations. Sisters of the Black Moon was a natural step for us to each expand and grow our artistic expression.

Your designs feel like they are from another time, what is your inspiration for them?
We started by selling vintage clothing. So our roots are very much from decades past.

What made you decide to continue to make your original lines by hand? What connection do you feel it makes when you create your clothing by hand?
Slow, hand made, hand crafted fashion has always been more appealing than mass produced fashion. It is thoughtful, it is special and honors the actual creation and construction of the pieces.

We see that you try to source most of your fabrics from environmentally conscious locations. Why is this important to you?
It is super important to us that we are conscious about our fabric selection. If we are honoring the creation of the clothing we need to be thoughtful about every step and this includes fabric selection.

Where do you find most your fabrics?
We get our fabrics from multiple sources.

Have you had any celebrities wear your clothing?
We have and it is always exciting to see. I think we are most honored to see humans from all over the world, with different ethnicities, sizes, genders wear our clothing.
