Where are you based?
I am currently based in LA, but I am originally from Texas!

When did you discover you wanted to be a singer and what inspired you to become one?
I think I gravitated to it. It was just something I really enjoyed, I would go outside and just sing to sing, haha.

After you auditioned for Clive Davis, you were signed on the spot. What was auditioning for him like?
It was so fun. I just commanded the room, fearless and ready. I sang a few songs to show everyone in the room my range and power!

You were only sixteen when your debut album, Paula DeAnda, came out. Could you describe the creative process behind this album?
I was on a mini radio tour so I had time to record the album in Corpus Christi, Texas. I also flew to Atlanta to work with Neyo, and the last place I finished the album was at Hit Factory in Miami!

My A & R, Steve Ferrera was spot on every time with the songs he would bring to my attention.

Doing Too Much and “Walk Away (Remember Me) were the album’s hits. What’s the story behind these songs?
Doing Too Much is my baby! Bash and I were in Corpus Christi, Texas writing and vibing when we stumbled upon the beat and instantly. We started humming a melody, which is now known as Doing Too Much!

“Doing Too Much” was Certified Gold. “Walk Away (Remember Me)” made it to the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. What went through your head when you found out?
Honestly, I thought it was so cool and such an amazing accomplishment. I didn’t even get to really soak it in.

In one word, how would you describe your music career?
Blessed!

Freaky’s music video is cutting edge and beautifully crafted. What was the idea behind the music video? How was your experience filming it during covid-19?
We kept it pretty safe on set. The crew was very small and everyone had amazing energy! It was such a fun, sexy shoot.

In what ways does “Freaky differ from your earlier music?
As I have gotten older, I’m freer... I’m a little more experienced. “Freaky” is just me!

Has COVID-19 upended or delayed your plans, and as an artist, how have you fared?
I’m still putting out music. But I think not being able to perform has affected all of us in one way or another.

I've gotten even more creative during this time. Every chance I get, I’m working on new Paula D things!

What are you hoping for 2021 in terms of your music?
I am definitely looking forward to performing and also attending live events again!

Before COVID-19, you were a recurrent performer for The Salvation Army. Could you talk a little bit about your work there?
Yes, I performed at their annual Christmas Day Giveback, singing Christmas songs. They have a nice theatre right down on the river in Downtown, San Antonio. It’s an amazing experience!

What is your motto in life?
Si Se Puede... it means "yes you can!"
