Low-Waste Home Improvements to Add Personality to Your Space

Do you want a zero-waste renovation? Such home improvement incorporates changes that produce minimal mess and reduce cleaning costs. It's a winner when you can achieve that goal while adding more personality. These low-waste improvement projects are ideal for showing your flare while avoiding environmental pollution and littering.

1. Decorate With Houseplants

Plants are the perfect low-waste decorations for your home. They bring pops of color and personality into your space while purifying your air. Unlike decor that you buy from a department store, plants won’t end up in a landfill someday.

You can also choose plants that serve other purposes beyond decor. Aloe is a great option, as you can use it to treat sunburns or mosquito bites instead of buying products from the store. You can also grow an indoor herb garden that can enhance your cooking while looking pretty.

2. Repurpose Doors and Railings

You may want to replace your front door or stairway railings, but what do you do with the old ones? Avoid waste by turning that classic door into a “new” tabletop, adding the banisters as legs or using them to make chairs. Simply add a glass top to even out any imperfections on the table and use it as a craft space in the extra guest room or on the back porch.

3. Repaint Your Kitchen Cabinets

Tired cabinetry usually produces a massive mess during removal, and it’s a costly renovation. Instead, paint your existing cabinets with quality paint. Just remember to use an appropriate primer to ensure good adhesion between the doors and your new fabulous color.

A neat trick is to replace old hardware like knobs with newer ones that better capture your personality. Repurpose the ones you take down into a fun rack for tools in the workshop or garage.

4. Revive a Ladder Shelf

Bathrooms often lack storage space, but with a revived ladder, you can easily create a shelf in a corner or beside the basin. Secure the feet in place with bolts and do the same where the top points connect with the wall.

Now, measure the distances between each slat and the wall, then cut pine shelving to size and secure each shelf to the slats with screws. Add a bit of heavy-duty mounting adhesive to the edges that rest on the wall, preventing each from slipping. Once your shelf system is dry, add a coat of paint to match your decor and arrange towels, candles and other essentials on it.

5. Coat Your Windows

Adding a protective coating to your windows is an excellent way to save power by creating an insulating layer that keeps heat in and cold out. Vacuum glazing may require installing a new window, but you can also choose PVC stick-on versions that help maintain lower electricity costs.

If you’re a birder, this is an ideal opportunity to install bird-safe glass. It has patterns or treatments that make the window more visible to birds, preventing them from flying into the glass.

6. Create a Mosaic

Do you have chipped or cracked ceramics that you don’t know what to do with? While you probably can’t use broken mugs or dishes any more, you can repurpose them instead by making a mosaic.

Create a pattern with the broken glass or ceramic pieces and leftover bits like beads, buttons, and even some of those handles you removed from the kitchen cupboards. You’ll want to put them inside something like a mold or a container with raised edges.

Fill your container with tile cement, and if you have an item that won’t stick, try silicone sealant to attach it. Cover the spaces in between with grouting for a neat finish.

You can use the mosaics as garden decor, wall art or anything else you can imagine.
