Jackie Hoffman Is Far From PC
I had never seen Jackie Hoffman perform live before, but I have enjoyed her characters on TV and films, most recently Uma Heller in Only Murders in the Building. She is often typecasted to play a mouthy older Jewish woman, which is basically her personality — so it is a perfect match! What I wasn’t as familiar with is her Broadway background and her solo shows! This evening I learned that Jackie Hoffman can sing!!
With musical director and pianist, Lon Hoyt, as her backup (partner in crime?), Jackie hit the stage with a bang singing about how the world is ending in its many different ways and followed that with her asking who has weed. This explains the title of the show — "It's Over. Who Has Weed?".
But this powerhouse of a woman was far from over! She sang nine different parody broadway-like songs that were amusingly and tragically relevant to our current affairs, and told stories in between lacing together her and our last few years in our crumbling world. Because if you can’t laugh at your life, what can you laugh at!
At this point, we knew we were in for a good night. The juxtaposition of the beautiful Joe’s Pub, Jackie’s classy jumper, Broadway-like tunes, and the filth that came for this woman’s mouth was hilarious! As she says, “curmudgeon is Jane Austin for cunt.”
I have to say, my favorite song of the night was “Better Than You”. In this charming ditty Jackie sings about how she is better than everyone else because she is elite in her sensitivity towards others and her ability to know everyone is equal.
In addition to pointing out how amazing she is, she also sang about how terrible AirBnBs are, Vancouver, and Larry The Lantern Fly. It might be winter now, but Jackie was on stage doing her due diligence killing all the imaginary lantern flies that were landing on the stage, which further amplified her message of where we are in the world.
While Jackie is far from PC, there is something very empowering seeing a 62 year old woman glammed up speaking (and singing) her truth. She knows where she is in life — she is her own rock star, and mine. And she cemented this with her closing act, which you will just have to experience in person.. WAP.
