When All Hope Seems Lost, There Is FIAA's Music
We all have scars that are remaining from something painful. We carry those scars in our souls and take them everywhere with us. However, not all of us brave enough to find the confidence to heal them and converted them into a masterful piece of music. FIAA was brave enough to do that. She showed her vulnerability and scars with her music and embraces her scars that we too often keep bottled up. We saw her talent with BBC1 Little Mix: The Search Talent Show and now, her newest single 'One Day' which is written with Rag'n'Bone Man reveals our heartbreaks, griefs, and pains, but also shows us we can hold on to music when all hope is lost. It reminds us 'No matter who we are, no matter where we are from one day it will all be ok.' The song tells the story of a fall-out that FIAA had with her best friend that she grew up whilst in foster care. Also, FIAA is using her voice for some of the UK's most important children's charities. We talked to FIAA about her career, personal life and future plans. Please read our exclusive interview below to learn more about her.
Where are you based?
I am from Surrey UK which is just outside of London.
What inspired you to get into music?
My mum and her friends brought me up around music and as soon as I found my voice I just couldn't wait to find everything I needed to know about music.
How would you describe the music that you create?
Every song I have ever written has come from my heart. My strength is within the lyrics because I like to tell a real story that may inspire others to know they can achieve anything they put their mind and soul into.
We saw your talent with BBC1 Little Mix: The Search talent Show. How was this journey for you?
It was beautiful and I am forever grateful to Little Mix for the experience. They gave me an opportunity to build a small platform and meet some incredible people that are passionate about what I do.
Congrats on your new single! Can you please tell us a little bit about your new single "One Day" and what inspired it?
Thank you so much. I had a fall-out with my best friend and we had grown up in care with each other. I wrote a song about our bond and then I realised the song represented every child's bond that had gone through care, we are all one, we are equal, we are family.
'One Day' reveals our heartbreaks, griefs, and pains. But, at the same time, it heals us in some way and gives hope. I think this song is a path to awakening. What does this song mean to you?
This is incredibly beautiful to say, thank you so much. It means exactly that to me too and it means no matter who we are, no matter where we are from one day it will all be ok, there is no limit, we must all believe in our own potential and do all we can to be the happiest version of us.
How was the process of creating this song?
It all happened quite quickly, we spoke about my fall-out and childhood and the inspiration and creativity just flowed.
One Day's lyrics tell the story of a fall-out that you had with your best friend that you grew up whilst in foster care and it is written with Rag'n'Bone Man. How was working with him and what's the actual story behind the lyrics?
Rory is amazing, he is a complete legend, he is so special and talented and a friend that I will forever be grateful for. The story behind the lyrics is generally about hope, community and equality. I had fallen out with my friend who I was best friends with since I was two. We had experienced a lot together and I knew no matter what was said or done we always had a bond that would never be broken and then I realised from writing this song that I was because we were in care and we shared the same heartbreaks which is like many other experiencing struggle, we are all in this together.
The theme of healing and hope can be felt easily in the part where the children sing. Is there a specific meaning of it? Did this hope stem from your personal experiences? Do you believe in change and healing? Do you have hope for one day 'Will we run away like we used to?'
I admit that I have felt broken in the past… I have scars within me that were once cuts that I had to heal, most of us have cuts within us and when we find the confidence to heal them then real growth starts. I hope that one day we will all be free-spirited, happy souls, we are facing such hard times but we must have hope.
You have some beautiful scenes with children in the music video of One Day. How was the
filming process with them?
Honestly so easy and so much fun, the children were more behaved than us, they knew their parts, they listened well and the day really was about them, the song was for them.
You spoke about your time in foster care on the show and now you wanted to use your voice for some of the UK's most important children's charities. We learned that the song's proceeds are split across Children In Need, Action For Children UK, Barnardo's, and PWSA UK. Can you tell us more about that and what it means to you to support them with your song?
These charities are amazing and deserve all the help they can get. They are actively providing for young people. I also have more collaborations coming up with one of these charities which I am so excited to be a part of. I will share more very soon on my socials.
You have always wanted to share your story with young people living in care to show them what is possible. Do you have a message for them?
This links to collaboration I have coming with one of the charities. I have the biggest message: I believe that we are all equal and should take every opportunity that the social teams give us to excel and change our future. I will await to say more because I will be sharing my story and messages on my social very soon.
Where do you see yourself in the music industry, and what other projects are you working on right now?
I just want to create songs that people feel and songs that inspire, heal and help others. I also love creating a musical world that takes my listeners and viewers into a dream world for five minutes and I hope to meet and support fans from all over the world and perform! I love to put on a show and travel is something that I hope comes with my career in music.
How pandemic has impacted you and your music?
Its stopped me from gigging, traveling, and meeting all my new angels that I've gained since the show, but otherwise I have done everything I can do. the main Thing iIve done is start a master degree in music to develop my musical skills but along the way I have met some incredible friends who are very talented and have taught me a lot.
How are you staying positive during a shelter in place?
I really am, it's been tough. I had a break up and I've had to learn to be alone and with my own company. I've had some losses and my mum’s health has been a struggle at times. But I've managed to face all of this and I've managed to grow! I think we all have to stick together and be as strong as we can, “ONE DAY” it will all be ok.
What is your motto in life?
I never victimise myself —I cry and then I get back up on my feet and face what I need to get through anything. I also believe in finding your purpose and fulfilling this and always put happiness before anything and then best chance of this is to live in the moment.
