Eyebrow Shapes for Every Face: A Comprehensive Look at Flattering Styles
“What is your face shape?’’
This is the first response I got after asking Joanna, a makeup artist, what the best eye shape for me is. Clearly that didn’t make sense to me. Afterall, the S-shaped brow was in style and I like everyone else was trying to jump on the trend.
For some, it was quite breathtaking, but for me and a few more…. we’d seen better days!
‘’Eyebrow shaping is like wearing makeup; not all shades of foundation can work for every skin tone!’’ Joanna went on to add.
After that, I went on a mission with the most common eyebrow shapes to uncover the secrets of the perfect brow shape for every face type.
With years of experience and a keen eye for detail, I've mastered the art of identifying the ideal eyebrow shape that not only complements but enhances your natural features. Whether you have a round, oval, square, heart, or diamond-shaped face, there's a specific brow shape that's just right for you.
So, what’s your face shape, what’s the best eyebrow shape for you and how can you achieve it?
The Different Face Shapes
When you look at yourself in the mirror, what shape can you see? Round, oval, heart… or it's not that clear?
Well sometimes it’s not that easy to figure it out. But luckily, there are a few ways to do this- some methods are more reliable than others. A less accurate, yet popular method is comparing your face shape to celebrities. For example, if your face resembles Beyonce, then you have an oval face. If it's shaped like Selena Gomez’s, then you have a round face. And if you find similarities with Naomi Campbell, you probably have a heart-shaped face.
Let’s go for the sure bet: measuring!
This method involves measuring key parts of your face to pinpoint your unique shape. Here's how you can do it: Start with your face length and measure from your hairline to your chin. Then move to your forehead width. Here, you’ll want to measure the widest section, which is the area between your hairline and eyebrows. Don’t forget your jaw length and cheekbone width: from tip of your chin to below your ears and across your cheekbones.
Let’s now determine your face shape:
If your face is longer (greater face length) than it is wider at your cheekbones, with a wider forehead than jawline, then you have an oval face.
You have a round face if the angle of your jaw is soft and less pronounced. This means that your face length and cheekbones have a similar measurement, and are larger than your forehead and jawline.
If your forehead measures greater than your cheekbones and jawline, with a pointed chin, you are heart-shaped.
If all measurements are fairly similar, don’t freak- it’s normal and you have what we call a square-shaped face.
For a diamond face, your face length measures the largest. Then, in descending order: cheekbones, forehead, and smallest jawline, with a pointed chin.
What is the Best Eyebrow Shape for Your Face?
After determining your face shape, the next step is to identify what eyebrow shape complements your features, and see why they work so well:
Oval Face
The oval face shape is generally the most versatile when it comes to eyebrow shapes. You can literally pull off any brow shape, but there’s one that flatters the oval face shape: a soft angled eyebrow. It has a natural arch, which follows the natural bone structure that creates a balanced and harmonious look, enhancing the face's natural symmetry.
Round Face
For a round face, the goal is to make the face appear longer. You can easily achieve this with a brow shape that creates the illusion of a longer face- and that’s the high arched eyebrow.
Heart-Shaped Face:
Heart-shaped faces have a wider forehead and a pointed chin. And with the wrong eyebrow shape, it will appear more pointed. With this face shape, you’ll want to go for an eyebrow shape that softens your face’s features. You definitely need a rounded or low arch eyebrow. This shape creates a natural, gentle curve that balances the pointed chin and complements the wider forehead.
Square Face:
Square faces have strong, angular jawlines, and like with a heart shaped face, you need a brow that will help soften these strong features. A curved or soft angled eyebrow can help to add a gentle curve to the brow to counterbalance the sharp angles of the jaw.
Diamond Face:
Got a diamond-shaped face? Picture this: those stunningly wide cheekbones paired with a more delicate forehead and jawline. Now, imagine eyebrows that just bring it all together perfectly. That's where a curved or rounded eyebrow comes in. It's like the perfect accessory to soften those angles and really put the spotlight on your eyes.
