Jewelry Designer: Caralarga
Name: Caralarga
Where are you based?
We are located in: Fabrica Hercules, a 1846 Textiles Factory in Queretaro, México. When did you establish Caralarga?
In 2014.Tell us a bit about Caralarga’s current collection?
We are based inside Hercules, a textiles factory established in 1846. We currently opened our studio-showroom with the intention of bringing and inviting our customers, friends to meet and see how we make things. We shared the whole process from the source to the finished products.
5. How long have you been designing jewelry?
5 years
6. What inspires you?
Simplicity, nature, and people.
7. What materials do you use to make them?
Caralarga Jewelry is made from 100% raw cotton threads, other natural fibers like sansevieria which is cultivated in the Yucatan Peninsula and can be dyed with natural techniques and colors. We also use waxed chord.
8. Does it limit your designs because they are made with raw materials?
Raw materials have their complications and challenges, but it is the challenge that many times injects motivation and passion when creating something. The good part is that because these materials are raw and beautiful in their most pure way, just laying there, simplicity is where I have found the way of design. In other words: raw, simple, and beautiful materials have taught me the way of design. So, no, I guess the challenge is more in communicating the qualitites and benefits of wearing, purchasing raw materials than in designing a finished product with them. I did not study or know anything about design or designing so I guess rather than being a limitation, simple, raw materials have made design an opportunitty for Caralarga, thanks to their simple, natural beauty.
9. Do you feel it’s important to use make handmade jewelry from raw materials of nature?
I think raw materials, craft techniques are the source for future innovation; the magic ingredient for a creative mind.
10. Do you wear any sustainable fashion designers?
I specially like buying folk art, handmade looms filled with color and folk motives.
11. Do you design clothes as well?
Yes, we just launched a RTW clothing line made from the surplus of 100% raw denim looms from Hercules, a textiles factory established in 1846. These are classified as ¨second hand¨ production looms because they have erros or accidents in the tissue. Therefore they are left overs that cannot finish the production process. They are raw as raw can be. These have become the main source for our SANTOS collection.
12. Do you have a store or is it an online based business?
We have an e-commerce www.caralarga.com.mx. We also wholesale and have a a showrroom for retail in the same space where we design and produce, and we receive customers and friends by appointment.
13. Do any celebrities wear your collection?
Not yet.
